TARUN Puri is the managing director and general manager of Nike India Pvt Ltd overseeing business operations of the sportswear giant in India. In a brief conversation with SportzPower’s Javed Farooqui, Puri speaks about the sportswear industry, Nike's latest Bleed Blue campaign and much more.

How is business shaping up for Nike India?
At this point of time our business is doing exceptionally well but I don’t want to get into the details of it.

How important is the Indian market for Nike?
Extremely important. Clearly Nike worldwide recognises the importance of the Indian market and the fact that we are currently sponsoring the Indian cricket team is an example of how much investment we want to put behind it.

What are your views about the Indian sportswear market?
I think at this point of time the Indian sportswear industry is small but it will grow over a period of time. So as there is more consciousness about health and also indeed about sports, I think parents no longer hold it against their children if they want to do something in sports. So there is a lot more consciousness about sports and a lot of consciousness about keeping fit. I think these strengths will help the overall industry to grow.

How is the Indian sportswear industry performing year-on-year?
There are very different figures so it is difficult you a number but my understanding is that growth rates of the industry are anywhere between 15-20%.

And what is the size of the industry?
On a retail basis, it (sportswear industry) will be about 2,500 crore (Rs )

You are also AIFF’s partner and Indian football team has qualified for the 2011 Asian Cup. Do you any marketing plans with them?
Again, we have an extremely good relationship with AIFF and I am very proud to say that the Indian football team has done so well and there are some great players in the Indian football and we have a lot of hope for Football in India. Very pleased to see what they have done.

Which medium are you going to focus on to get your message across?
We have a complete media strategy… across different media channels. Its much more about connecting to the Indian youth and therefore there is a very strong on-ground, above-the-line but also its been done digitally and we had almost a million handprints digitally, which is a first in India.

Which are the cities that you are focusing on?
It’s an all India campaign.

Which TG are you trying to reach out to through this campaign?
The focus audience is 16-21 years. But then of course there are many other people who buy our products because they feel so strongly about the brand.

Globally, Nike is aggressively into Golf, what is your plan for the sport in India?
Golf is not looked after by the Nike India office but there is a strategy on Golf and it is looked after separately. Since, I don’t look after Golf I don’t want to comment on that.

Apart, from cricket and soccer, which are the other sports that you are focusing on in India?
We have Football, we have Tennis, we have Basketball, Boxing, Running, every sport. In Running we have the Nike Running Club, we have a huge Gym programme that we do, the MSSA (Mumbai Schools Sports Association) in Football, so we have a number of properties across a number of sports.

Could you talk about Nike Running club?
What we are trying to do is trying to build sports at the grass-roots. We have a strong association with the MSSA and there what we are trying to do is inculcate Football into the Maharashtra schools and that’s been a grand success. MUPC, which is the Manchester United Premier Cup actually started by Nike in India, had 60 odd teams and 100 plus teams that participate now. Then if you take the running club, we started that activity two years ago we now have 10,000 members. If you are in Bangalore and if you know how to run then you can go to the Nike Run Club. The Nike Run Club that we launched in Mumbai, which is on Marine Drive, and you want to learn running, then I urge you go there because the kind of techniques that they teach you is unique and our focus is to try and create a culture of running within India.

Indian, UK boxers in Fight Night Lagaan Cup

MUMBAI: Monnet Ispat and Energy Ltd and Percept Ltd have announced India's first joint venture contact sport event called Fight Night Lagaan Cup that will take place on 12 September at Hyderabad and 14 September at Balewadi, Pune.

Representing India are the likes of Vijendra Singh, Dinesh Kumar, Dilbagh Singh and Diwakar Prasad while boxers from the UK who will be competing include Martin Stead, Liam Cameron and Hosea Burton.

Monnet Ispat has signed a $ 1 million deal with the Indian Boxing Federation to become the event's kit and team sponsor for the next three years. The broadcast partner is Star News. The event is supported by two-wheeler giant Hero Honda and energy drink XXX.

Delhi court for legalising betting in sports

Even as the nexus between syndicates centred in India and match fixing has blown up yet again in the face of cricket's administrators, a trial court in Delhi has suggested that betting in cricket and other sports should be legalised in the country.
The court made its remarks while allowing an appeal by two accused who were held guilty of organising 'satta' in the World Cup match between Australia and South Africa in 2007 by a lower court. The court cited lack of sufficient evidence while allowinmg the appeal.
"It is high time that our legislature should seriously consider legalising the entire system of betting online or otherwise so that enough revenues can be generated to fund various infrastructural requirements for the common man and thus check the lucrative business in organised crime," the court said.

Citing a media report, the court said more than Rs 200 billion were pumped in by betting syndicates in Indian Premier League matches last year.
"A little surfing on the internet would reveal that in Delhi alone there would be operating as many as 2,000-3,000 bookies at any given point of time when cricket matches or even other matches are played all over the world. This could not be done under the very nose of police without their knowledge," the court said.

Wrestler Pooja clinches silver at Youth Olympics

Vijender's bronze at the Beijing Olympics got international fame for Bhiwani.
Now, Pooja Dhanda's silver in the inaugural Youth Olympics in Singapore has placed Hisar, another sleepy town in Haryana, on the world map.

The 16-year-old wrestler opened the country's account at the Games by defeating three opponents without conceding a point. Pooja eventually lost 1-3 to Baatarzorig Battsetseg of Mongolia in the final to settle for silver in the 60kg freestyle category.

“From Day One, I was confident Pooja will bring laurels for the country. Finally, the day has arrived,“ said coach, Subhash Chander Soni.

Before the Youth Olympics, Pooja had won silver at the Asian Cadet Championship in Thailand.

“After losing the final to a Japanese wrestler at the Asian meet, Pooja was disappointed and wanted to make up for the loss. Though I was expecting gold, a silver in a big tournament is no mean affair,“ Pooja's father, Ajmer Singh, told HT from Hisar.

Pooja's passion can be gauged from the fact that after clearing her Class X board exams in 2008 with an impressive 87.5%, she could have opted for Science or Commerce. Instead, she chose Arts. The reason was she wanted to devote more time to wrestling. In her Class XII board exams this year, Pooja scored 86.4%.

“My daughter has made me proud and I am waiting for the day when she will again grab a medal at the London Olympics,“ said her father.

But initially, Ajmer had his doubts. “When we used to stay in the village, I was also of the opinion that girls were not made for sports. But when we shifted to Hisar and I saw girls pursuing sports, my mindset changed,“ he said.

Pooja had also tried her hand at judo and won three international medals, including gold at the 2nd Youth Asian championship.

It was the success of Geetika Jhakhar, an Arjuna awardee, which got Pooja interested in wrestling.

“I want to wrestle like Geetika didi one day and earn fame like her,“ Pooja had told HT a year ago.

A peck on the cheek while greeting a female acquaintance is "just not done" when you are in India. Sole exception: Only if the acquaintance is a model or a beauty queen. Tourists should, however, discuss politics. Most Indians love to talk politics and 'have an opinion on which they will not mind being contradicted'. But equally, visitors should avoid discussing religion.

These are advices a website set up by the Common-wealth Games Travel Office, incredibleairindiapackages.org, provides foreigners planning to visit India during the Games.

"This is an official website of the Ministry of Tourism and Air India, created especially for the Commonwealth Games," said Sunil Kundu, an official at the Common-wealth Games Travel Office.

Other tips on etiquette, the kind of food available, shopping and even toilets can also be found.

If tourists are unsure about the quality of food the website suggests they 'do not eat salads and stick to vegetarian food.

If shopping from a roadside stall, one should 'be prepared to bargain. Start by offering half the price and settle for 60 per cent.

"These guidelines are very stereotypical. How can you know if a model is ok with a peck on the cheek or that Indians do not mind being contradicted about politics?" said Olle Kitanda, a DU student from Kenya.

The site also advises tou-rists to utilise every chance to use the toilet in a good hotel, as roadside conveniences are usually unclean.

Four Indian Wrestlers part of Australian squad

Four Indian-origin wrestlers including Sandeep Kumar are part of Australian national squad, Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs M S Gill informed Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

Replying to supplementaries during Question Hour, Gill said Kumar obtained Australian citizenship and represented that country in the Beijing Olympics.

Besides Kumar, three wrestlers, including another sportsman with the same name as Sandeep Kumar, are in the Australian squad and may participate in the Delhi Commonwealth Games in October.

"Lot of people from various parts of India are migrating for economic reasons to Australia," he said and denied that any Indian wrestler who won Gold medal for the country in Moscow wrestling event in 2000 had migrated to Australia.

"The Wrestling Federation of India had not sent any team to Moscow for wrestling even during the year 2000," he said.

Govt staff turn M S Gill's chowkidars

Sports Authority of India (SAI) employees Raj Singh and Des Raj, both watchmen with the SAI Northern Centre, Chandigarh, have been working without a single holiday from July 1. They work 12-hour shifts without any overtime or weekly or compensatory offs - they even worked on Independence Day, a mandatory day off for government employees.

But which precise location do they work at?

Not at the SAI Northern Centre office. They come in to the office only once a week, to mark their attendance.

For the rest of the time, they get a salary of Rs 15,000 each a month (a total of Rs 30,000 of taxpayers' money) to watch over House No 507, Sector 33B, Chandigarh, a private residence.

The Chandigarh estate office record lists the house owner as M S Gill, who is also India's Sports Minister.

Northern Centre's Deputy Director V S Chauhan admitted both watchmen were employed by the Centre, but refused to comment when asked why they were posted at Gill's private residence.

A SAI official however, told Hindustan Times they had received "verbal orders" to that effect.

"There's nothing in writing, but we've been told to make sure someone's there as the house is empty," said an official.

This correspondent, posing as a SAI official from Delhi, visited the house at 1 pm on Monday, when Raj Singh was on duty.

Asked whether he was taking proper care of the house, Singh said: "We have been coming daily to the Sports Minister's house from July 1, and haven't missed a single day. Des Raj has some personal work today and will not come for the night shift, so I will stay for an entire 24-hours."

But because this is not official overtime, Raj Singh will get no extra payment.

Gill could not be contacted by phone (either on his cell or at his office or residence) and did not respond to text messages.

Meanwhile there is a staff crunch at SAI's Northern Centre.

"We have to constantly work overtime as Raj Singh and Des Raj are away doing duty at Minister sahib's house," said one employee.

"Somehow we manage. But it's even tougher for both of them, with their 12-hour shifts. If Gill sahib wants his house guarded, why can't he hire a private security guard?"

Sunil Paul from Hillguard, a private security firm in Chandigarh, said a guard can be hired for about Rs 7,000 a month for an eight-hour shift.

Sachin's blood in a book @ $75,000

How much would you pay to own a piece of Sachin Tendulkar, literally?

At least 10 people are willing to fork out $75,000 (approx Rs 35.2 lakh) for a very limited edition of a book about him, the Tendulkar Opus, which will feature a page made from paper pulp that includes the master batsman's blood.

“The signature page will be mixed with Sachin's blood -mixed into the paper pulp, so it's a red resin. It is what it is -you will have Sachin's blood on the page,“ publisher Kraken Media's chief executive Karl Fowler is quoted as saying by the Guardian newspaper. “It's not everyone's cup of tea. But the key thing here is that Sachin Tendulkar, to millions of people, is a religious icon. And we thought how, in a publishing form, can you get as close to your god as possible?“ Fowler also confirmed 10 such special copies had already been pre-ordered and all proceeds from the sale of these books would go to Tendulkar's charitable foundation to help build a school in Mumbai.

The book, due to be published in February to coincide with the World Cup in India, will contain previously unpublished family photographs from Tendulkar's album. It weighs 37 kgs, comprises 852 pages and is edged in gold leaf.

To accommodate the tastes of those who aren't excited at the prospect of blood, even if it is Sachin's, and whose wallets don't fancy the hefty price tag, a “regular“ edition is available at $ 2,000 3,000 (Rs 94,000 1,41,000).

The publisher will print 1,000 such copies, and all will be signed by Tendulkar and include his DNA map, but not his actual blood.

Hard work, determination and a little bit of narcissism that seems to be ace-badminton player Saina Nehwal's (above) success mantra. “More than playing badminton,“ she laughs, “I love winning and seeing my photos in the papers. That drove me to play more and more. Even today,

I love standing on the podium. Nothing else matters,“ says Saina, who's second only to World No 1 Yihan Wang.

Success, of course, comes at a price, but one that Saina is all too willing to pay. “You must have a good physique in this game. I have a strong body.
I cannot put on weight. So, I stopped eating oily food and ice creams. Only when I win do I treat myself and eat whatever I want,“ says Saina, in an interview to Verve magazine. And, doesn't she miss living life like regular girls her age? Hardly seems so.
“I do whatever I am told to do. So, people believe that Saina will always listen.
Basically, I am a nice person. I love the game so much that I want to spend time on the court. Even while growing up, I would love working hard. My body would hurt after workouts, but I loved the pain. I want to make myself so perfect that I will become World No 1.
That is my target,“ she signs off.

Add to that the support of loved ones and you've got a champ. “I tell my mother everything and try to share as much as possible with her,“ says Saina.
“My father is very emotional. When he comes to tournaments with me, he gets nervous. And so he watches me on television.“

The Commonwealth Games organisers' problem of finding a suitable caterer for its venues just got messed up some more. The Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), one of the frontrunners for the catering contract, has just lost its rights to provide catering services on trains.

Indian Railways in its newly formed catering policy has just stripped IRCTC of all rights to serve food on moving trains, even though the experience in providing food to a mass based clientele on trains formed the basis of the corporation's claims to the Games catering contract.

The corporation would now sell food only at food plazas at select stations, the policy dictates, and its current resources towards catering will be curtailed.

Officials at the Organising Committee (OC) are in doubts about the corporation's capability to cater at the venues.

"How can we trust a company's capability when its own parent organisation doesn't trust it with this job?" a senior OC official said on condition of anonymity.

While IRCTC refused to speak on its proposal for catering for the Games, sources said it has already gone ahead and hired infrastructure such as space in Delhi and deputed some officials after "strong signals" from the OC that it could bag the contract.

"We serve one million meals a day (in the railway network and elsewhere), so how can our capability as a caterer be in doubts?" asked a senior IRCTC official.

Earlier this year, after failing to find any suitable vendor for catering, the OC was in talks with IRCTC to serve packaged food at all venues, but in the last moment that deal fell apart.

Mayookha pulls off the unthinkable

From the time she started to jump in 2002, Mayookha Johney dreamt of bettering Anju Bobby George's long jump record. Though she had given it a thought, Mayookha hadn't in her wildest dreams thought she would break Anju's not so often spoken about national record in triple jump. Call it a quirk of fate or a reflection on her talent, Mayookha entered an event she had not participated in the whole season. Yet, she won gold with a hop-skip and jump of 13.68m during the National Inter-State Athletics meet on Friday. "This is the first time I tried my luck in triple jump this season," said the lanky athlete from Kerala after bettering Anju's 13.67m record set at Hyderabad in 2002. Kulwinder Kaur of Punjab won silver with 13.42m while Prajusha won the bronze with a leap of 13.28m.

"The conditions were perfect," said Mayookha. "I could have jumped 13.70m. Anyway, I have now qualified for the Commonwealth Games as well."

Mayookha had won the long jump gold at the Asian All Star event in Delhi recently and is looking to break the long jump national record soon. She has paced the season well and is targetting the Commonwealth Games to peak. "That (long jump record) should come soon. All I need to do is focus on my training," said the 22-year-old. "Hopefully, during the Games I shall be able to better Anju's record," she said with a smile.

Dimri scorches track

If Mayookha could afford to smile, Pankaj Dimri had every reason to laugh. He might not have broken the three-decade-old 800m national record set by Sriram Singh, but ran the fastest 800m since the legendary athlete's effort at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal.

Dimri also set the meet record at 1:46.26s. The man from Uttaranchal felt he ran one of the best races of his life. "I am happy with my effort and happier still to qualify for the Commonwealth Games," he said. The qualification mark was set at 1:47.50s. Though he thought the CWG would be tough, he felt he had a good chance at the Asian Games if he maintained his current form.

Australians worried about preparedness

Ever since the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) has made its probe report public, revealing improprieties and poor quality execution of 15 Commonwealth Games (CWG) projects, it's been flooded with unusual calls. Foreigners, especially from Australia, have been calling up the commission to find out whether it would be safe to visit India for the Commonwealth Games.

"Every day we are getting desperate calls from foreigners. Many Australians have called up to enquire whether the quality of the construction work is substandard. They seemed concerned and wanted to know whether it would be safe to visit India," a CVC official said, wishing to remain anonymous.

"We have been telling them they need not worry at all since the problem is not as big as it is made out to be," the official added.

However, this is not to be mistaken as calls from the Australian government or athletes from that country.

The CVC inquiries into burgeoning allegations of corruption in Commonwealth Games projects have raised an alarm in India, with the government expressing serious concern over the poor quality work at various sites.

But the vigilance commission has maintained that inspections were carried out by its chief technical examiner's wing in a routine manner and it was not the final investigation report.

Singapore based sports Marketing and managements company fails to bring sponsership for CWG

Another crucial component of the 2010 Commonwealth Games - procuring sponsorships for the event - seems to be getting derailed. The Singapore-based Sports Marketing and Management (SMAM), with whom the Organising Committee (OC) had signed a contract for negotiating and procuring sponsorship and licencing contract, has failed to generate adequate sponsorships.

The contract was inked in 2007. SMAM had at the time of signing the contract promised to raise sponsorship worth R 470 crore (US $100 million). Of this, it has so far managed to get R 125 crore.

Adding insult to injury, the flawed contract agreement that the organising committee signed with SMAM has ensured that despite the latter failing to deliver, it will get commission from sponsorship that it did not procure on its own (like those coming directly to OC from public sector undertakings). PSUs such as Air India, Central Bank of India, NTPC and Railways have committed sponsorship worth R 250 crore.

Sources say in a recent meeting, unhappy with SMAM's performance, the OC was mulling terminating its agreement but was advised against it by its legal team.

"The exit clauses of the agreement are very tough. If we scrap it, we will not only end up paying money to the company but the latter has threatened to go into arbitration against us," said a source.

Hemmed in from all sides, OC could only tell SMAM that it was not making enough effort and has asked it deliver.

The OC sources say not only has SMAM failed to deliver but it is also using the flawed contract to get commission from sponsorship it did not procure on its own.

Of the R 125 crore that SMAM has managed to raise so far, R 36. 5 crore is value in kind. For instance, Swiss company Omega will be providing all TSR (Testing Scoring Result) gadgets worth R 19 crore, while Agility, an international logistic firm is providing logistical support to the game. Amity International is providing training to volunteers at a total cost of R 5 crore.

"There were loopholes in the contract. The OC should have drafted the agreement more carefully to safeguard its interest. This was not done," said an official, requesting anonymity.

Lalit Bhanot, OC spokesperson, said, "I cannot comment on this. I do not carry figures with me all the time. I will have to find out."

The contract had clauses for commission that sources say was very high. Also, according to the contract, the OC had agreed that the total income tax liability of SMAM under the income tax Act will be limited to 10.54 per cent.

After making a mark for themselves on the field, Indian women cricketers Anjum Chopra, Jhulan Goswami and Mithali Raj have now ventured into uncharted territory -- coming together for a documentary film based on their life both on and off the field. The 25-minute-long documentary -- Poor Cousins Of Million Dollar Babies -- has been directed by an upcoming sports film-maker Sunil Yash Kalra and takes the viewers through the moments of trials and tribulations, joy and success of these cricketers as they etch there names in the cornerstones of the male dominated world of cricket.

The docu-drama highlights their struggle, hard work and determination to achieve the milestones despite receiving far less attention from cricketing bosses, sponsors and media coverage. The film which took almost five years to complete peeps into the life of women players and revolves around strong bonding that these cricketers share among them.

"This is my tribute to Indian women cricketers. I just wanted to show an aspect of the cricketers which has never been shown before," said Kalra, who had made programmes on women cricketers on Doordarshan.

Terming the entire narrative as an eye-opening experience, Kalra said the documentary shows that disparity does not play hindrance for these girls and that they play for the country and not for money. "The documentary shows that these girls, despite the omnipresent disparity in the team, play for pride not for plight," Kalra told PTI. "We got support from different sporting authorities for the film.

I had never imagined that this sort of welcome would be given to the documentary," said the director. The players themselves were very confident about the film since its beginning and Anjum Chopra, former Indian captain, herself termed the narrative as an "encouraging step".

"Not everyone makes a film on this topic. Very few people do something like this.

This is an encouraging step for creating awareness about the Indian women''s team," said Chopra. The preview of the film was screened for a select audience in Kolkata last year and the response was "overwhelming".

"It feels good to see people taking interest in this type of documentary," said Chopra.

The documentary will be showcased at the Shamiana Festival in Mumbai and then later at the Canadian film festival. One can only hope that its impact will be a bit more long lasting than Chak de and will actually benefit the game and not just the box office.

"Yeh hai Dilli meri jaan," is what he believes in. He also feels the Commonwealth Games will be a great opportunity to motivate youngsters to take up an Olympic sport like boxing, badminton, wrestling and shooting.

"What we should really think about is how to leverage the Games to spread sporting culture in the country."

Singh, however, is of the view that focus on sports should not end with the Games.

"A lot of money might have been spent on the the Games, but in Patiala we still train in a tin-roof hall without air-conditioners. Imagine that when the temperatures soar to 45 degree Celsius."

If you thought gracing promotional events in the Capital is all the official mascot of the Commonwealth Games does, you were mistaken.

At the Commonwealth Games organising committee (OC) office in the morning, you can spot him serving tea to Games officials and moving files from one desk to another.

Meet Satish Bidla, the 23-year-old man whose job it is to breathe life into the 10-kg mascot suit and, of course, also to help babus in the office.

Bidla arrived at the OC's office at Connaught Place six months ago, looking for a job.

"I wanted the job of an office boy and started serving tea to senior officials and running other errands," he said. "One day I was asked to walk around by some officials. And they liked my gait."

At 5 ft 8 inches, the man from Chandigarh is the only official Shera on the OC's payrolls.

"He is the best Shera who has worked for us so far," said a senior OC official.

"He is very energetic even during outdoor events in this searing heat."

The Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (OC) is looking for a few good men.

The OC needs young, energetic people to don the costume of the Games' mascot 'Shera'. At present, it only has one full-time employee performing the role during all promotional campaigns and events. With the Games just three months away, it needs at least 10 more.

"As the main event approaches, the number preliminary events and promotional campaigns will also increase. That is why we need more such people," said a senior OC official on the condition of anonymity.

Currently, the mascot is being used extensively during volunteer-training programmes.

"The idea behind a mascot during promotions is to make people aware about the Games and encourage them to become a part of it," he said. "The mascot wears different T shirts during promotions to publicise different events."

The search has not been easy though. "We have tried many people but being Shera is a tough job," he said.

"The person has to be very energetic and has to act in a particular way which not many can carry off daily in such harsh weather," the official added.

"The person inside the costume has to wave at crowds for hours at times, shake hands with hundreds of people and get pictures clicked with them. It is a very demanding job and not everyone can do it."

Shera, the mascot of the Commonwealth Games 2010, is modelled on a Royal Bengal tiger and its costume is blue shorts and a white jersey. The mascot was first introduced at the closing ceremony of the Melbourne Commonwealth Games 2006.

The mascot is also a reminder of the fragile environment the Bengal tigers live in. The Bengal tigers are an endangered specie because of their habitat loss, poaching and environmental degradation.

Dhoni lodges complaint against sports company for cheating

Team India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has lodged a police complaint against a Kolkata-based sports management company charging it of cheating him of Rs 10 crore.

A doranda police staion officer has said that Dhoni has sent us a letter to lodge an FIR against Game Plan Private Limited.

According to police, Dhoni entered into a three-year contract with the Game Plan in 2005. As per the contract, the company handled advertisement related work of Dhoni. The contract ended in January 2008. In his complaint, Dhoni alleged that Game Plan took three advertisement contracts on behalf of him after the contract ended but did not pay him any money, the officer said.

Labourers to dance at Commonwealth Games

It is the perfect rags-to-riches tale. A dance troupe made up of daily wage labourers will perform at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games.

The Prince Dance Group will show off its prowess at the sporting event, which starts on October 3, in Delhi.

The group hails from a tiny village close to Berhampur, Orissa and was started in 2005 by Krishna Gopal Reddy.

It initially shot to fame last year when it won the reality show, India’s Got Talent, on TV channel, Colors.

It is unique because it is made up entirely of daily labourers from a construction site, some as young as 15. None are professional dancers.

“I have only heard about the Commonwealth Games. I have no idea what it actually is or who are the competitors. All I’ve heard is that it is a huge platform. I haven’t decided anything about the performance,” admits Reddy.

But he adds, “It feels great! It’s like a dream come true. From where we started off, none of us ever imagined that we would reach here.”

Two of the members, Padmanabha Sahu and Telu Tarini are physically challenged.

“Padmanabha was my classmate,” Reddy says. “When I used to dance during my student days, he used to do whatever he could do. So I started training him and now, after all these years, he has improved a great deal and I’m sure after a few years, he won’t need anyone’s help to become a full-fledged dancer.”

The group won Rs 50 lakh and a car from Colors. To top that, the Orissa government announced a cash prize of one crore rupees and four acres of land for the group to build a dance academy.

Reddy says, “Out of the prize money, Rs 20 lakh was deducted as taxes and of the remaining 30 lakh, we distributed a lakh each among all the boys. As for the car, we have given it to the village, so that the villagers can use it in an emergency.”

But as for the government’s promise, Krishna says, “The talks are still on. We have heard nothing concrete about their decision. But if we do get the land, I would love to start a dance institute.

“Then, I will teach many boys to dance. Many of them are very interested in dance now. I am sure if a proper path is paved, they will do amazing things.

“In today’s dancing styles, people have forgotten what our culture is and I want to remind them in a form in which they understand,” he signs off.

New Delhi, June 5 -- In just two days since the sale began, tickets worth more than Rs 80 lakh were sold for 19th edition of the Commonwealth Games to be held from October 3 to 14 in the Capital.

On day one, 1700 tickets worth Rs 20 lakh were sold.

"The response is overwhelming. We hope to reach our target very fast," a Commonwealth Games (CWG) organising committee spokesperson said.

He, however, could not specify the number of tickets sold so far.

The organising committee expect to sell 17 lakh tickets generating Rs 60-70crore.

Tickets can be bought from seven branches of Central Bank of India, five Hero Honda showrooms and from the Commonwealth Games (CWG) website.

Ticket are priced from Rs 50 to Rs 1,000, but prices for the opening ceremony have been kept between Rs 1,000 and Rs 50,000 and for the closing, from Rs 750 to Rs 50,000.

Indian Rail Catering and Tour Company (IRCTC) has been appointed as the official ticketing agency for CWG 2010 in consortium with Broad Vision Systems and TicketPro.

An added advantage for those queueing up to purchase tickets is that each ticket holder would be entitled for free travel in the Delhi Metro and DTC buses to reach and return from the venue on the day of the event.

National Games heading for another postponement

The importance accorded by the Indian Olympic Association to the National Games can be gauged from the fact that within days of announcing fresh dates for the premier domestic event in Ranchi from December 9-22 - they will have to postpone it for the sixth time.

Reason: The dates are clashing with the second Beach Asian Games in Muscat from December 8-16.

IOA president, Suresh Kalmadi, had announced on May 25 that the Games would be held from December 9-22 without bothering to check the international calendar. A source told HT that fresh dates would be announced in a couple of days and "the event is proposed in February".

"Finalising the Games' dates is the prerogative of the IOA, but it is shocking and embarrassing for the organisers. This time, the postponement is because of the callousness of the IOA. How can the IOA ignore the international calendar," said a Jharkhand Olympic Association official.

"The Beach Asian Games is a multi-discipline event where some of the players short-listed for the National Games would be competing. Quite a few officials, who had been assigned duties in the Ranchi Games, would be going for the Beach Games. So, the IOA was left with no choice but to postpone it," he added.

The Games, originally scheduled in 2007, were postponed twice because of delays in completion of infrastructure. After three more postponements on account of various reasons, they were scheduled for November-December last year. But again they got postponed as the dates clashed with the Assembly elections.

"Earlier also when the Games were postponed in February 2008 due to delays on account of infrastructure, the IOA had come up with fresh dates in June. In June, the climatic conditions were not favourable for hosting sporting events in Ranchi and it led to another postponement," said a state Olympic official.

Cricket is beginning to draw a younger and wider demographic of fans, including more women, according to research by Sport+Markt.
The research agency reports that innovations including the Twenty20 format are behind the increasingly wide appeal of the sport, based on research conducted in India, the United Kingdom, South Africa and Australia.
The share of women who named cricket as one of their favourite sports on television increased 12 per cent in the UK, and 6 per cent in South Afrcia between 2008 and 2009. It grew by 1 per cent in India, although Australia bucked the trend with a 4-per-cent fall.
“During the same period cricket has also experienced an increase [in popularity] amongst the target audience of 16-29 year olds in countries such as Australia (+ 5%) and South Africa (+4%), whereas there was a marginal decrease of one percentage point in India and the United Kingdom,” said Ravi Chavan, of Sport+Markt.
"However, given the fact that there has been an overall increase in the total number of 16-29 year olds following cricket on TV has nevertheless increased in 2009 as compared to 2008.”

As many as 13 out of the top 15 seeds advanced into the next round of the boys' singles of the Asian Junior Tennis Championships (a test event for the Commonwealth Games) being played here on Wednesday at RK Khanna Tennis Complex.
India’s highest seeded player in the boys section, Sai Kartik Nakireddi (No. 4) cruised into the next round with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Dmitriy Borodkin of Kazakhstan. Ronit Singh Bisht (seeded fifth) and No. 6 seed Vaidik Munshaw also entered the next round with ease.
Other Indians to have progressed ahead are Sumeet Shinde, Mansingh Athare, Saurabh Singh, Rakshay Thakkar, Siddharth Rawat, Rishabdev Raman and Shahbaaz Khan.
Earlier, National Champion Ankita Raina silenced the challenge of spirited Pakistan player Ushna Suhail in two sets to make her way to the pre-quarterfinal in the girls’ singles.Ankita, 14th seed in this tournament was extended in the first set by Suhail who is from Lahore but managed to win the match at 7-6, 6-4.

Get ready for a designer ride

Using gramophones, colours of Bollywood and inspiration from the clean lines of a paper plane - fashion designers have designed rickshaws to give visitors a fancy ride during the Commonwealth Games.

Imagine taking a ride on a cycle rickshaw which has a telephone, gramophone and clocks of three different time zones for your convenience. Not only this, the seat and hood, made up of silk with gold works will give you a royal feel. This is no ordinary transport but a designer's prized creation as these humble rickshaws have undergone a much needed facelift to ply visitors during the upcoming Common Wealth Games.

These fancy rickshaws were recently showcased in the Capital. Designer Samant Chauhan's rickshaw Victoria on wheels aims to recreate the magic of British era. Explained he, "If you look into the history you would find that the British were very fond of this medium of transport. So, I have used antics from the colonial period like gramophone and telephone on two sides of the passenger seat to give passengers the feel of the bygone era. The backside of the seat has three watches that showcase the timings of three different countries (South Africa, London and Sydney). The rickshaw has also a lamp at the front." He added, "The unique thing about the telephone is that it will only be functional on the move and many service providers are willing to provide their connection." The designer has also taken into account the adversities of rising temperatures. "The reason I have incorporated recycled silk," he said.

Designer duo Rahul and Gunjan titled their creation, Ghungroo ki awaz, which they said took just three days to design it to perfection. Inspired from the 1980's chartbuster Ghungroo ki awaz, their designer rickshaw has ghungroo fitted all over the body. The wheels have pink and green beads and peddles have kolhapuri chappal fitted in it. The hood has moon and stars drawn from inside and the outside has peacock feathers pasted on it. "When we were designing it we had only one thing in our mind that we will try to show people for things that our country is famous for. So, we have selected Bollywood as the main inspiration and rest of the materials such as pea-cock feather, ghungroo, kolhapuri chappal followed one after other," said Rahul.

The duo has also taken special care of passenger comfort. "We have provided cushions also on the seats to have a comfortable journey. The materials which we have used are all natural fibres such as cotton and linen as our moto behind designing this mode of transport is to go green," said Rahul adding that he love traveling in a rickshaw rides but unable to enjoy as they are banned in most of the places. The duo now aims to design a bus.

Taking inspiration from the paper planes made by the kids, designer Nitin Bal Chauhan has designed his cycle rickshaw light so that it can be easily pulled while ferrying. His rickshaw is coloured white, all from the seat to the hood. "The white colour will automatically generate a light feeling among the pullers. I have prepared this rickshaw right from scratch. I have designed this paper weight rickshaw with an error dynamic shape keeping in mind the plight of the rickshaw puller. I have also provided a basket for them to keep their belongings. Also provided a metal foot stand for the passenger," said Chauhan, who never misses a chance to hitch a rickshaw ride whenever he visits Old Delhi.

Instead of just giving it a plastic makeover, designer Rajesh Pratap Singh focussed on improving the technical aspects of his rickshaw. He coloured it in white with red seat to give it a classy look. For example, he used shockers under the seat to give the passengers a bump free ride. Also, there is a rear view mirror which others don't have.

Rugby India will host its first-ever HSBC Asian5Nations competition on June 2 and 5, at the newly-constructed Delhi University Rugby stadium (North Campus), which is also the site for the upcoming Commonwealth Games to be held in October. Rugby enthusiasts will witness International action under lights and watch an India-China face-off on Indian soil like never before. The four teams that will battle it out at the prestigious tournament are India, China, Thailand and Philippines. All the four nations have been performing well at the international level and the competition promises to be fierce.

The winner of this Division II tournament will earn their spot to participate in Division I and the team that finishes last will be relegated to Division III. This is also the first time that Rugby will be played under lights in India, providing a whole new dimension to the game, and much excitement for Rugby fans in Delhi. Entry to the stadium is free of cost.

Govt ready to fight air pollution ahead of Games

The Delhi government is planning to go all out against air pollution during the Commonwealth Games.

In a high level meeting of top officials chaired by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, many suggestions were discussed to contain pollution level during the 12-day event in October this year.

It was decided that polluting vehicles from neighbouring states will not be allowed to enter Delhi during the Games.

The Chief Ministers of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh will be contacted so that pollution check of vehicles coming to Delhi is carried out inside their respective territories.

The timings of plying trucks in the Capital will be strictly enforced and restriction on light vehicles carrying goods during daytime might also be considered. Extensive pollution check drives will also be carried out in Delhi during September and October.

Parking charges might also be hiked during Games to discourage use of private vehicles.

Parking at unauthorised places will invite a heftier charge but that can happen only after an amendment in Motor Vehicles Act.

To overcome problem of parking mafia, the government is planning to deploy ex-servicemen to counter the menace.

The government is also planning to expedite work on the Western Peripheral Expressway to ensure its completion before October, 2010.

The expressway will take the load of non-destined vehicles that enter Delhi. Around one million vehicles enter the Capital every day.

In the meeting, a suggestion was also presented to shut down coal-based power stations during the Games. The government may consider this in case of Rajghat Power Station which is generating 135 MW power. During the Games schools and colleges will remain closed and this will mean that 1,200 school buses and 2,500 maxi cabs will remain off the roads.

On Day 4 of the Asian Wrestling Championship, the Indian Greco-Roman team proved that they are a force to reckon.

The hosts added two more medals to the four they have already picked up. Four Indians were in the fray, and all four came within a whisker of medals. Rajender Kumar lost to Kyun Jin Choi of Korea in the 55 kg final to settle for the silver. Sunil Kumar got the better of Tahi Sutep Oomchompoo in the 66kg category repechage final to bag India's second medal of the day. In other encounters of the day, Manoj Kumar lost to Iran's Davoud Abedinzadeh 0-3, 0-1 in the bronze medal play-off in the 84 kg category.

Dharmender Dalal was also in the running for a bronze, but he too missed out, losing narrowly, 0-1, 0-2 to Liu Deli of China in the 120 kg category.

With Saturday's wins, India's tally in the championships rose to six - two gold, one silver and three bronze medals.

The heavy thud of wrestlers hitting the mat sent shock waves through the room. Emzar Makhardze, the Georgian coach of the Indian wrestling team, singled out a grappler in the mess of twisting bodies, screwed his face in disgust and shouted: "Two points. You just lost two points. Balance! Where's your balance?"

In the large room at the training centre of the Sports Authority of India in Sonepat, near New Delhi, a 12x12m yellow square mat was the centre of all the action. Earlier this week, we visited Sonepat to watch how the Indian wrestling team was preparing for the Asian Championship, which ends in Delhi on Sunday, and the Commonwealth Games which will be held in October.

Olympics bronze medallist and Asian champion Sushil Kumar entered the ring after the rest of the team finished its session. He went straight down on the floor with his sparring partner. They circled each other with intense concentration before Kumar lunged forward at lightning speed, grabbed his partner's waist and twisted him around the back in a graceful arc that ended with a bone-crunching fall on the mat. For the next hour, the two wrestlers sweated it out silently, moving with surprising speed and agility for such muscle-bound men. The silence was broken only when one of them fell on the mat.

The new training centre comes equipped with two Olympic-size wrestling mats, a state-of-the-art gymnasium and a running track. The wrestlers have air-conditioned lodgings. A massive new gym and training centre, almost the size of a football field, is nearing completion. This infrastructure renders new-age wrestling a world apart from the traditional sport whose rules, techniques and training regimens were described in the 13th century text Malla Purana, and the mud-pit akharas where Indian team wrestlers, including Kumar, began their journey from. "There were only a handful of wrestling mats in India before Sushil won at the Olympics," says Jagminder Singh, India's freestyle wrestling chief coach. "Now, you will be hard-pressed to find a single akhara or club in India that does not have a mat along with the traditional mud pit."

Kumar says the changes are positive, but the secret to his success is that he started in the traditional way in an akhara, which shaped not just his physique, but also made him mentally strong. The wrestlers still straddle both worlds at the training centre, following a diet popularized by the akharas. Kumar begins his day with a big glass of milk blended with crushed almonds. He prepares this himself, as do most other Indian wrestlers. "Traditionally, a wrestler in India prepares all his food. It is like making an offering at a temple; in this case, his own body," says Singh.

Kumar follows the milk and almond shake with half a cup of ghee, a bowl of porridge with full-cream milk, a bowl of fruits, two bananas, a few pieces of toast and a protein shake. Enough energy there for the training routine that follows-20 minutes of running, 500 push-ups, 500 squats, stretching, and then an hour of wrestling practice.

After every practice session, the wrestlers drink copious quantities of sweet lime or orange juice (another age-old akhara tradition) and more protein shakes. In the evening, it's time for three more hours of brutal training-climbing up and down a 20ft-long rope without using the feet to grip the rope (Kumar can do it 50 times in a day). This strengthens their upper body. It's followed by a session of weight training at the gym and finally, a brief bout on the mat.

There is a big change from the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where coach Satpal Singh doubled up as the masseur for Kumar. It's not just the wrestling surface or training facilities that have changed-the Indian wrestling team now has two foreign coaches, two Indian coaches, two physiotherapists, a doctor and a masseur.

The Mittal Champions Trust, set up to help elite athletes in India, has also thrown its weight behind the team, with its director of athletic performance, South-African Heath Matthews, spending time in Sonepat trying to fine-tune the training and recovery procedures followed by the grapplers. "The support we are getting now is unprecedented," says Kumar, "I think (that) with this kind of backing, we are looking at a large medal haul at the Commonwealth Games."

The Asian Wrestling Championship is on at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, New Delhi, till 16 May (2-9.30pm).

China dominate as hosts grab bronze at Asian Wrestling Championship

It's rare that even when all the host athletes are out of contention for gold or silver, the atmosphere is still electrifying.

This rarity came to the fore on Day Three of the Asian Wrestling Championship at the refurbished Indira Gandhi Stadium on Friday. It wasn't because the largely Indian crowd was rooting for grapplers of other countries, but because as many as six Indian women had a chance of bagging bronze.

Things didn't begin too well though, Nirmala Devi and Babita Kumari lost in the 48 and 51kg respectively.

That was when 2006 Doha Asian Games and 2009 Asian Championship bronze-medallist Alka Tomar (59kg) took to the mat against Kazakhstan's Miruert Dynbayeva. Tomar had earlier lost a closely contested semifinal to the eventual gold-medallist, Liu Fengming of China, and she looked unwilling to take any chances. Both wrestlers took their time, sizing each other up, before attempting to score any points. In the end, Alka came up trumps without difficulty, but she was visibly disappointed.

"I made a tactical mistake against the Chinese girl. I tried to apply a hold, but ended up putting myself in a difficult position. I had worked towards gold and am disappointed. I know I can do better than bronze."

Her coach Mohinder Singh added that there was a need to toughen up the girls before the Commonwealth Games. "Many girls representing other countries are really tough. Our girls are technically gifted, but we need to work on their strength and toughness. This is what we are going to do between now and the Games," he said.

Soon after Tomar's win, there was more reason to cheer for the Indian camp as Suman Kundu (63kg) comfortably bagged the bronze beating Kazakhstan's Olga Kalinina.

Geetika Jakhar, the 2006 Asain Games silver-medallist was up next against China's Chen Ying. It proved to be a tough bout for both the wrestlers as they could only earn a point each in the first round. In the deciding round though, Chen scored, and despite Geetika's attempts to get back, Chen's defence proved too strong.

Anmol was the final Indian in the fray in the 72kg category, but she went down 12-0 to her Japanese opponent.

All in all, it was a mixed day for the hosts. There was plenty of potential on display, but the dominance of the Chinese women, whose national anthem was easily the most heard tune on the PA system, also showed that there is a lot of work to be done by the Indians.

Narsingh Pancham Yadav did the unthinkable. Not only did he get India’s first gold at the Senior Asian Wrestling Championship, he did so by overcoming Iran’s Saeed Nematollah Riahi in the 74kg freestyle category.

Nobody doubted his credentials before the bout, but taking on one of Iran’s best in the title clash wasn’t exactly going to be a cakewalk. Indian chief coach Jagmender Singh had predicted the fight to be one of India’s toughest in the campaign, and that’s exactly how it turned out.

The Iranian’s quick reflexes and fluid footwork had Yadav struggling to have a say in the bout as Riahi took the first point after he had the Indian youngster pinned on the mat. But the crowd favourtie hit back immediately make it all square at the end of the first period. The second peiord got off to a similar start, with both wrestlers earning a point each, but Yadav clinched another in the winning moments to lead India to its first gold medal in the tournament.

India started their campaign with a gold medal in Senior Asian Wrestling Championship that commenced at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Sports complex on Wednesday. Reigning national champion and last year’s Commonwealth Wrestling Championship gold medalist Narsingh Yadav beat Iran’s Saeed Riahi in the final of the 74 kilogram freestyle category. MUMBAI: Network 18 Group’s sport marketing arm Sport 18 plans to create a chapter a year for its Cyclothon and have 12 Cyclothon events in a year by 2012 for the property that was launched in October last year in Bangalore.

Besides, Sport 18 also looks after the TV production for all the three Procam International promoted marathons namely Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore marathons.

Sport 18 operates in the vertical of rights management, sports sponsorship and sales management, sponsor servicing, international representation, sports broadcasting and production and sports consultancy. The company is also involved in a research and consultancy especially in motorsports.

Wrestling federation finds team sponsor

NEW DELHI: It was happy tidings for the Wrestling Federation of India which has found a team sponsorship. ”We are on the final stage of a deal with a corporate for team sponsorship, and it will be inked in the next 10 to 15 days,” GS Mander, president of the federation told SportzPower on the sidelines of a press meet to announce the test event for the CWG.

However, he requested not to be pressed for the details right now, as the talks are going on.

Mander said that federation is also looking for marketing and promotion of wrestling.

“We are now financially sound, so our next target is to promote wrestling in India and also try to collect some funding through marketing”, said Mander.

Mander announced the details of the Senior Asian Free Style, Greco Roman Style and Female Wrestling Championship.

This championship will be held in the wrestling stadium in Indira Gandhi Sports Complex from 12 to 16 May.

When asked about expenditure for the championship, Mander said that it’s difficult to give an exact figure, because too many agencies are working together. “The OC provides the highest volume of the finances and the rest is being spent by the federation itself,” he said.

“I think the total cost of championship will come to more than Rs 10 mn,” said Mander. In this championship a total 257 grapplers from 21 countries will participate.

Mander was confident that Indian grapplers will shine in the event. "This is a big tournament.”

“We are leaving no stone unturned to make it successful. I hope that the Indians will put up good performances in the event,” he added.

We are participating in all the categories," said Mander. "Wrestling is very strong in Asia and a very high level of competition is expected,” he stressed.
The Commonwealth Games are coming up and then there will be the Asian Games, which is the other big targets ahead of us," Mander added. Wrestling world body FILA president Raphael Martinetti along with a large number of FILA officials will supervise the event, he revealed.

Doordarshan will live telecast of the competition – a test event for the CWG event in October on all five days.

He admitted that the wrestling stadium is not 100 per cent complete, but added: “These things happen and everything will be in place before the championship,” he stressed.

Haryana lived up to its reputation of being India's "Wild West" on Saturday night.
Models, which were to walk the ramp for fashion designer Sanjana Jon, had to face the ire of over 50,000 Jats as their hero Dalip Singh Rana aka The Great Khali failed to turn up at a wrestling event.

Over 50,000 people attended the event.

"Yoddhao Ka Sangram", held at the Tau Devi Lal stadium in Gurgaon, saw more action outside the ring than inside after the organisers announced at the eleventh hour that The Great Khali would not turn up.

The stadium, packed to four times its capacity, erupted in anger with the crowd damaging the property and pelting stones at the convoy of Sanjana Jon, who reached the venue a bit too late for the action, which had already started.
When we reached the stadium, I was shocked to see the security arrangements at the venue. So I along with my models returned to the hotel, and waited for things to settle down. After an hour or so we were assured of the security arrangements and we went again to the venue only to be mobbed by the angry crowd," Jon told MiD DAY. "I asked the models to stay in the car and not open the door. We had brought lovely gift items for the poor girls out there, all of which were stolen," the fashion designer alleged.

Even the models complained of eve teasing, bomb scare, gunshots and misbehaviour. Khushboo, who was part of the show, said, "Someone even threatened me with a gun. It was completely maddening out there. We were left at the mercy of the hooligans.

Sanjana and I where in the same car, and she decided not to conduct the show. We went to her place, changed and returned to our respective homes." Another model Sanjana Bhatia who was supposed to walk the ramp said, "I heard someone shouting that there's a bomb and some people have opened fire. We left the venue."

Repeated attempts to contact the organiser of the show D S Babbar yielded no results.
Another wrestler Sangram Singh proved to be the saviour, as he tried to placate the mob even as there was no sign of the organisers. Singh, who is also the brand ambassador for Commonwealth Wrestling, said, "It was my duty to attend to the people as they were feeling cheated. I am also from Haryana and we don't leave people in the lurch. I had to chip in as even Babbar was absent."

In a new twist to the IPL controversy involving the ruling NCP, Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal of the NCP said here on Saturday that the Maharashtra government had decided to levy the entertainment tax on IPL from the next season in 2011.

"At a meeting held last month, the State Cabinet decided to impose entertainment tax on IPL from the next season. The minutes that meeting were confirmed by the State Cabinet at a meeting held on Thursday," Bhujbal told The Pioneer here.

Bhujbal's statement came as a big surprise considering that the state had all along maintained that no decision had so far been taken in this regard even during the hearings of a PIL - filed by Shiv Sena leader Subhash Desai seeking the levy of entertainment tax on IPL - held before the division bench of the Bombay High Court on April 23 and May 5, 2010.

In the April 23 hearing the high court had demanded to know from the DF government as to why it was dithering on deciding to levy entertainment tax on IPL matches played in Maharashtra, while the HC division observed in the May 5 hearing: ". prima facie this activity (IPL matches) is covered under entertainment tax. If there is no exemption, then state has no option but to recover it".

The State government had remained silent even when it tabled (April 24) in the State Legislature the latest report of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), which rapped the Ashok Chavan administration for its failure to levy entertainment tax on the IPL matches played in Maharashtra to the extent of Rs 4.99 crores during 2008.

When asked as to why the state government did not inform the Bombay High Court on May 5 that it had decided to levy entertainment tax on IPL from the next season, Bhujbal simply said: "I don't know anything about it".

In this regard, both Chief Minister Ashok Chavan and Revenue Minister Narayan Rane of the Congress were not available for comment.

Income Tax dept gets Rs 400 cr as TDS from IPL

The Income Tax department probing alleged financial irregularities in the IPL has collected TDS of nearly Rs 400 crore from the third edition of the T20 tournament. The department has accrued the amount as Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) from the remuneration paid to players, umpires, coaches, commentators and from payment of overseas publicity rights.

I-T authorities are putting together the "final figures" of TDS collections as they are collecting information from various of their offices across the country where the IPL franchises are registered.

"The TDS collections from the third edition of the IPL are cruising towards Rs 400 crore-mark. The department is finalising the collections from across the country," a top I-T officer said. The I-T department is currently not only probing the source of money into the tournament but is also investigating the "taxation aspects of transactions relating to the Indian Premier League" including the flow of money from offshore destinations into the tournament.

After the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were crowned winners of the IPL in on April 25, the department started collating and collecting the taxes under the TDS category paid by the various franchises to "professionals and professional services".

The department had collected documents related to bidding, payment of taxes and various other financial details during its countrywide survey operations on various IPL franchises, with the first such operation being conducted at the BCCI and IPL premises including at the office of former IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi on April 15.

The I-T department in has created a special cell of officers to monitor the IPL as the metropolis hosts the IPL marketing and advertising offices. Almost eight investigation wings of the dept in various cities are also probing the IPL transactions.

Kumar started training at the Chhatrasal Stadium's akhada at the age of 14. Trained at the akhada by Indian pehlwans Yashvir and Ramphal, and later by Arjuna awardee Satpal and then at the Railways camp by coach Gyan Singh, Sushil endured tough training conditions which included sharing a mattress with a fellow wrestler and sharing a dormitory with twenty others.At the age of 18 he become state champ.
His first success came at the World Cadet Games in 1998 where he won the gold medal in his weight category. He followed this up with gold in the Asian Junior Wrestling Championship in 2000.

Moving out of the junior competition, Kumar won the bronze medal at the Asian Wrestling Championships in 2003 and followed that up with a gold medal at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships. Kumar placed fourth in the World Championships in 2003, but this went largely unnoticed by the Indian media as he fared badly in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, in the 60 kg class placing 14th.

He won gold medals at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships in 2005 and 2007. He ranked seventh in the 2007 World Wrestling Championships, but managed to qualify for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. He followed this up with a Bronze in the Asian Wrestling Championships, before heading for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Kumar was awarded the Arjuna Award, in 2006.

The first edition of Pearls World Cup Kabaddi Punjab-2010 kicked off on 3rd April with prize money of Rs. 2.16 crore which is the higest ever offered by any non-cricketing sport in the country.

The mega event is hosted by the Punjab Government at eight different venues across the state. The 10 day event features nine teams, including UK & USA. Host India have been placed in pool A while traditional rivals in Pakistan are in pool B.

The opening ceremony of this first-ever international kabaddi tournament showcased the strong cultural legacy of India through folk dances of 14 different states. Besides, spectators were regaled by Punjabi singers and comedians.

Bollywood actors Dharmendra and his son Sunny Deol also participated in the function.

“The tournament has attracted 15 private sponsors stepping in for the event. Its is for the first time in the history of Punjab that kabaddi tournament is offering prize money in crores” said Bikram Singh Majithia, Senior vice chairperson of the organizing committee

Legendary athlete Milkha Singh's inspiring life - the triumphant spirit of the man and his tale of winning the world despite daunting odds - will soon be seen on the silver screen.

"Rang De Basanti" fame filmmaker Rakeysh Omparkash Mehra is all set to make a film "Bhag Milkha Bhag,” recounting the stimulating story of Milkha Singh, who is popularly known as Flying Sikh all across the world.

'Bhag Milkha Bhag' is not about any particular sport, trophies or medals, but it is about the fire that Milkha Singh had. I just want to spread this fire across the world and want people to learn from it.
"Now I am very happy and I have charged only one rupee from them. I just want others to extract motivation out of the movie. They should believe in themselves: if a village boy like me can win laurels for the country with meagre resources and virtually no support, why can't anyone else?" said Singh.
The movie will be shot at various locales in India besides in Japan, Pakistan and some European countries.

Mehra is very meticulously choosing his team to give the film the perfect touch. Joshi is writing the screenplay of the film.

Joshi said: "I have met Milkha Singh many times in the last few months in connection with this new project. We have to do a lot of homework as we are aiming to tell a story of a man who rose from nowhere and attained various benchmarks in athletics in a cricket-obsessed country."

Afridi set to become T20 captain

Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi is set to take over as captain of the team for the ICC World Twenty20.

Afridi, who was penalised three million Pakistani rupees has apparently been informed by a senior PCB official that Board chairman Ijaz Butt would meet him an hour before a Twenty20 match at the Gaddafi Stadium to mark Pakistan Day, The News reported.

Earlier some reports had suggested that Butt was considering seniors Abdul Razzaq, Misbah-ul-Haq and Salman Butt for captaincy but the PCB boss might have zeroed in on Afridi given his exceptional Twenty20 record.

The leg-spinning all-rounder was Man of the Series in the first edition of the ICC World Twenty20 in England and had bagged Man of the Match awards in the semi-final and final in Pakistan’s successful campaign in England in 2009.

Afridi told 'The News' that it would be a ‘big honour’ for him if he were asked to lead the team. “I am not thinking about it at this time but if I am made captain then I have a clear mind on what I want to do and how I can successfully manage the team.”

IPL brand value doubles to $4.13 bn

Quickfire cricket format Indian Premier League's (IPL) brand value has more than doubled to $4.13 billion (over Rs 18,000 crore), while 'Chennai Super Kings' has emerged the most valued franchise this year, says a study.

Ranked fourth last year, Chennai Super Kings led by M S Dhoni has moved to number one with a valuation of $48.4 million, followed by Shahrukh Khan-owned Kolkata Knight Riders ($46 million) and Shilpa Shetty's Rajasthan Royals ($45.2 million).
The valuation of teams pale in comparison to the IPL brand itself, which has more than doubled from last year's $2.01 billion.

"The IPL brand alone has risen significantly from the previous year's valuation providing tremendous economic value to its owner BCCI," according to brand valuation consultancy Brand Finance.

"In comparison to international benchmarks for sporting business' such as EPL (English Premier League) which is valued at $12 billion, the IPL juggernaut, in a short span of 3 years, is valued at $4 billion and has the potential to grow further," said Unni Krishnan, managing director, Brand Finance India.

"A huge amount of Intellectual property is being created by the complete IPL ecosystem which was sustained despite last year's difficult economic conditions. This demonstrates the exponential value of IPL and the Brand potential in a cricket loving country like India and other global cricketing countries," Brand Finance said in a release.

The individual franchisees have also seen a fair amount of uplift in value since last year.

Vijay Mallya-promoted Royal Challengers Bangalore is ranked fourth this year with a valuation of $41.9 million and is followed by Nita Ambani-owned Mumbai Indians ($40.8 million), Delhi Daredevils ($40.5 million), Kings XI Punjab ($36.1 million) and Hyderabad Deccan Chargers at the bottom with a valuation of $34.4 million.

संगोष्ठी का विषय राष्ट्रमंडल खेल से संबंधित था- ‘‘खेलेगा हर कोई, जीतेगी दिल्ली’’। कार्यक्रम के मुख्य अतिथि वरिष्ठ पत्रकार एवं सीएनईबी चैनल के सी.ई.ओ. श्री राहुल देव थे। उन्होंने देश के विकास में खेलों की उपयोगिता पर बात करते हुए कहा कि आज जरूरत इस बात की है कि जिस कोर्स को खालसा कालेज ने शुरू किया है उसे ज्यादा से ज्यादा कालेजों द्वारा अनुसरण किया जाए। साथ ही यह भी जरूरी है कि जो आधारभूत ढांचा राष्ट्रमंडल खेलों के लिए तैयार किया जा रहा है उसका बेहतर उपयोग इन खेलों के बाद भी होता रहे तभी देश के विकास में इसकी सार्थक भूमिका होगी। वह अस्थायी विकास का साधन बनकर न रह जाए।
अन्य वक्ताओं में ईएसपीएन के सौमित्र बोस ने नए पाठ्यक्रम शुरू करने पर खालसा कालेज को बधाई देते हुए कहा कि आज खेलों पर आधारित पाठयक्रम की अत्यंत आवश्यकता है। यह बड़ी खुशी की बात है कि खालसा कालेज देश का ऐसा पहला कालेज है जिसने खेल और बाजार के संबंधों को पहचाना।
राष्ट्रमंडल के सलाहकार समिति के सदस्य अविनाश सिंह ने खेल और विकास के आपसी संबंधों पर चर्चा करते हुए कहा कि खेल के एक आयोजन से किसी भी शहर, देश के आर्थिक परिदृश्य में बहुत बदलाव आता है। जिस तरह से आइ.पीएल के आगमन से खेलों का आर्थिक परिदृश्य बहुत उपर चला गया है। पैट्रोलियम मंत्रालय के अखिलेश झा ने खेल के वित्तीय पक्ष को उजागर करते हुए कहा कि खेलों में वित्तीय आडिट के साथ सामाजिक आडिट होना भी बहुत जरूरी है, तभी खेल अधिकारियों की जवाबदेही तय होगी।
कोर्स डेवलपर एवम स्पोर्टस एंकर अर्जुन जे. चौधरी ने कालेज प्रधानाचार्य डा. जसविंदर सिंह की सार्थक भूमिका को सराहते हुए कहा कि नए विचार को पाजिटिव रुख अपनाना ही आधी सफलता हो जाती है। कोर्स के सफल होने के पीछे प्रशासन की सकारात्मक सोच बहुत जरूरी है। उन्होंने खेल और मीडिया के आपसी मजबूत संबंधों पर भी प्रकाश डाला। साथ ही उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि खेल के विकास में विज्ञापन की महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका रहती है और खेलों में पैसा तभी आता है। धन्यवाद ज्ञापन पाठयक्रम समन्वयक डा. स्मिता मिश्र ने करते हुए कहा कि आज शिक्षा को परम्परागत विषयों से आगे बढ़ाने की जरूरत है। प्रतियोगिताओं में जंकयार्ड वार्स,स्पोर्ट्स क्विज, स्पोर्टस पायट्री, बास्केटबाल, क्लिक ए पिक, आर्म रेसलिंग जैसे रोचक इवेंट आयोजित किए जिसमें भारी संख्या में विद्यार्थियों ने ‘‘जोश’’ में बढ़चढ़ कर भाग लिया।

Sports and Economics Marketing and Web Journalism Department of S.G.T.B Khalsa college , Delhi University organized a sports event- “ Josh- come out and play” at the college premises with Mr. Rahul Dev, C.E.O – CNEB as the chief guest.Sh Rahul Dev said that Commonweath games is brought a new horizon to Indian Games. but the good work should not be stopped after CWG 2010.He put an emphasis on the need to use the infrastructure in the right direction with good planning and strategies after the CWG 2010.Prof Avinash Singh ( Advisor of CWG2010) underlined the changing scenerio of Indian sports after the happening of IPL .IPL and Commonwealth Games have great impact on Indian economy. He emphasized on the importance of sports marketing in the ever- changing and advancing society, and the revenue it generates. Mr. Saumitra Bose ( Head of digital media,ESPN mobile) throws the light on importance of digital media in sports economics. where we have the media in our pocket with the advancement of technologies. Mr. Arjun J Chaudhari (TV sports Anchor )said that there is a great need of sports courses nowadays.As this course is launched for the first time in India in the SGTB Khalsa College.He put an emphasis on the interrelationship of Media and Sports. Advertising plays a greater role to popularize the sports. Mr. Akhilesh Jha ( ICS officer ministry of petroleum ) underlined the importance of financial audits as well as social audit. Then only the promotion of sports will be more transparent.Dr Smita Mishra(Course Coordinator) shared her thoughts on the need for marketing the various sports in todays world Speaking on the occasion.

The other dignitaries present there were Sh Sushil kumar Rajput( Former Captain of Indian Kabaddi Team) ,Dr Dr Jaswinder Singh(Principal)S K Lau (Limca Book Of Records)who all being well known faces in the field of sports , Adding more colour to the event was the different sport themed activities like - Junkyard, Sports poetry , Arm Wrestling , Basketball – 3point shot, where students participated from various colleges. The event winded up with a bang, leaving the audience cheering with ramp- walk , promoting the various sports which is to be conducted by CWG 2010.
